Towson goes smoke free

Starting on August 10^th, Towson University will become a smoke free campus. Students will not be allowed to smoke anywhere on campus without receiving a fine. Many students have different views on the new ban. Watch the video to see one students opinion>>

While most couples around the world exchange chocolate and kisses for Valentine’s Day some exchange viruses like mononucleosis.

According to webmd.com, “Mononucleosis, also called “mono,” is a common viral illness that can leave you feeling tired and weak for weeks or months.” Mono is most commonly transferred through saliva giving it the nickname “the kissing disease.”

Symptoms of mono seem like a regular virus. They occur 4-6 weeks after the initial exposure. You feel tired, achy and overall awful. Instead of a regular bug running it’s course, mono gets progressively worse.

Mono is a very common illness among college students. Sophomore Lena Devietro had mono last year and was left missing a week of school and had to return home. Missing a lot of classes can be very detrimental to ones college career.

“My professors were pretty lenient on missing work since I had e-mailed them. Also, Dowell had e-mailed them confirming that I was going home due to mono,” Devietro stated.

Anyone with mono can tell you about the dreaded sore throat. “My glands were swollen and hurt terribly; that was probably the worst part; the worse sore throat I’ve ever had in my life,” said Devietro.

There is no cure for mono, just bed rest, basic medicine and increased fluid intake. Gargling salt water can also help sooth the agonizing throat pain. Switch gears and stimulate the ice cream industry rather than gas companies. Chances are you won’t be driving anywhere anytime soon.

Just like any illness, confirm with your partner about whether or not they’ve had mono. While a kiss is lovely, being healthy is lovelier.

For my beat I have decided to cover health. The topic seemed appropriate considering that last semester I missed a cumulative of 3 weeks due to illnesses. On a college campus it’s very easy to pick up a virus. Many bugs travel quickly whether through poor dorm ventilation, dirty surfaces or lack of sexual protection. My blog is designed to cover different health issues around Towson University and how they may affect you.

Hi my name is Alyssa Zauderer and welcome to my blog. I am a sophomore at Towson University majoring in journalism and new media. I was born and raised in Roslyn, NY., a small town 30 minutes east of Manhattan. I grew up with four younger brothers and a dog. My bass is my most prized possession. I have been playing for four years and love it. Music is a huge part of my life. Coheed & Cambria has been my favorite band since 2003. In total, I have seen them 19 times live. I enjoy most genres of music and attend concerts frequently.
